LB 442 BULK FLOW METER
The non-contact, non-intrusive solution to
bulk flow measurements!
Non contact mass flow determination of solid matter on continuous conveyor systems:

As commodity prices continue to rise, the need for accurate, repeatable bulk flow meters becomes more important. Customers are also looking for systems which require little or no maintenance while performing in the most rugged of conditions. 

Traditional mechanical bulk flow meters require on-going maintenance. In addition, frequent calibration is required and alignment and belt tension problems result in additional labor to keep these systems operating. 

The Berthold Technologies LB 442 Bulk Flow Meter uses time tested and proven radiometric technology to measure a wide variety of solid materials in different conveyors. Using no moving parts which can wear out and create additional maintenance, the LB 442 is highly accurate and repeatable with performance typically within +/-1% of maximum loading or better depending upon the application.(*). 

The LB442 Bulk flow Meter can use three different radioisotopes to measure materials that range from heavy solids to the lightest of powders. No other company in the industry can offer this kind of flexibility in a non-contacting, non-intrusive bulk flow meter! 

The LB 442 can also provide a number of different bulk flow measurement system combinations using continuous rod sources, rod detectors and point sources. Individual applications will determine what is the most optimal combination for a particular application.

How does the LB 442 operate? 

In this particular application, the rod-shaped radiation source is specially designed for the application with respect to the loading, material and the conveyor system itself. The radiation source is installed in a lockable shielding which is mounted under the conveyor. The scintillation counter is installed on top of the conveyor and is in line with the radiation source. The intensity of the radiation received by the scintillation counter is inversely proportional to the loading on the conveyor system. The evaluation unit calculates the mass flow rate based on the detector signal and the belt speed input from the tachometer. The choice of radiation source depends on the material loading:

for heavy belt loading: 60Co is used 
for medium belt loading: 137Cs is used 
for light belt loading: 241Am is used
